Search results show about the first 60 characters of a page title. Longer titles are cut off, and audit tools report them.

Why Joomla sites get it

The page title (the <title> tag) is not just the article’s headline. If Site Name in Page Titles is set in Global Configuration → Site, Joomla adds “- Your Site Name” to every page title, so a headline that looks a reasonable length can still produce a title over 60 characters. Shortening the headline itself is rarely what you want, because it is what readers see at the top of the page.

Fix it by hand

  1. Open the article and go to the Options tab.
  2. Fill in Browser Page Title with a shorter version of the headline. Joomla uses it for the page title instead of the headline, and still adds the site name.
  3. Keep the title plus the site name to 60 characters or fewer, and save.

Fix it with MetaGen

MetaGen’s Title too long check measures the title search engines actually see: the Browser Page Title if the article has one, otherwise the headline, plus your site name. Fix fills in a shorter Browser Page Title, cut at a word boundary, and leaves the headline as written. Check the shortened titles in Articles changed; for an important page you may prefer to write your own.

MetaGen is free for Joomla 5 and 6. See all the SEO warnings MetaGen checks.
